Nephin 806m - 2nd highest peak in Connacht

Details

Nephin Mhor 806m or Big Nephin is the second highest mountain in Connacht. It is just 8m short of the Mweelrea the highest in the west.

It is a free standing quartzite mountain with commanding 360 degree views.

It overlooks the Titanic village of Lahardaune and the nearby beautiful lake of Lough Conn to the east. To the south we can see the summit of Croagh Partick and on a clear day Slieve League in Donegal and Benbulben in Sligo.

The tragic tale of a group from the north Mayo village of Lahardane has seen it renamed Ireland’s Titanic Village.

In April 1912 fourteen men and women from the parish of Addergoole in Lahardane set sail from Queenstown, Cork for a new life in America. Within days, eleven had died in the icy waters of the North Atlantic when their ship, the famous SS Titanic, sank on her maiden voyage.
